You can bet the farm on these. They’ll be as effective in five years as they are today. The latest social media fads may come and go, but some strategies for attracting a visitors/audience online will always be in style.

Make Your Content Irresistible

  1. All the promotion in the world won’t build a thriving audience if your content sucks. Truly incredible content, products or services can be your best marketing tool. Everything you do online has to start with creating something incredible.
  2. Don’t be afraid to say what everyone else is thinking that not saying. Other people are probably thinking about it too, and they’ll love you for being brave enough to say something.
  3. Write epic shit.
  4. While you’re at it, make a real case for why the world should actually give a shit about what you have to say.
  5. Put your words in a different format. Go visual. Try creating an infographic or a SlideShare presentation.
  6. Go big. Write something so incredibly thorough and valuable that people are compelled to share it.
  7. Interview someone exciting. You’ll learn something and the interviewee will probably share your session if you do a great job.
  8. Learn how to create a viral post, and try creating one yourself.
  9. Cut out the fluff. Publish when you have something worthwhile to share, not when your calendar says you’re supposed to publish.
  10. Headlines! Headlines! Headlines! They’re ridiculously important. Enough said.
  11. Give away your secrets. All of them.

Take Your Show on The Road

  1. Be everywhere. Make videos, create a podcast, represent on different social media platforms.
  2. Write guest articles for other blogs. This is still one of the most effective and underused strategies for building your own audience. Just do it and stop making excuses.
  3. Join Help a Reporter Out (HARO). Do a good job and you might just end up on the front page of Yahoo.

Make Your Case Clear

  1. When someone comes to your site, you have to answer the question they’ll be asking themselves: “why should I spend any time on this site instead of one of the dozens of other sites I already know and love?” You have to answer this question quickly, clearly and compellingly. Your Unique Selling Proposition is the key to making your case. If you don’t have a USP, it’s time to get one. Start with our guide to finding your USP.

Keep Them Coming Back

  1. The best audience is a captive one. Instead of constantly relying on other sources of traffic, create your own by getting your visitors to subscribe for updates from you (focus on email first, social media second).
  2. Directly ask people to subscribe once in a while. Tell ’em what’s in it for them.
  3. Create special subscriber-only content.
  4. In your welcome email for new subscribers, point them to your social media profiles so they can connect with you in different ways.
  5. Optimize the heck out of your email sign-up offer. Try placing email sign-up boxes in different places (in your header, sidebar, within posts, end of posts or footer). Try changing the wording, button label, call to action and offer. See what works best over time. Just keep the best interests of your audience in mind and don’t do anything you don’t appreciate yourself.

Make it Pretty(ier) and More Functional

  1. Your site’s design matters more than you think. If you have a crappy looking design, you’re missing out because too many of your hard earned visitors are leaving before they read your incredible content.
  2. Design for function. What do you want your site to achieve? You want to hook your visitors and keep them coming back. Design with the end goal in mind.
  3. Use social proof. New visitors are looking for clues about whether your site is worth spending time on. Use validation (in the form of metrics, testimonials, “as seen in” logos, etc.) to reinforce your value.
  4. Make it easy for people to share your content (try using a plugin like Digg Digg, for example).

Play Nice with the Search Engines (SEO)

  1. Optimize your headline and content URL for the search engines. Use the Google Keyword Tool to find popular keywords. Don’t worry about optimizing your content. Write for humans like normal but use keywords in your headline and content URL.
  2. Make sure your site is Google friendly. Offer a sitemap, use an SEO-optimized platform (or plugin) and register for Google Webmaster Tools.
  3. Focus on optimized content instead of link-building for long-term SEO success.
  4. Make your site as fast as possible. Site speed is now a factor in search rankings, and a faster site will keep more people from leaving before your page loads. Consider moving to a faster web host and leverage caching (if you’re on WordPress try using a caching plugin like Quick Cache).

Borrow What Works

  1. Innovation is important, but using proven formulas is smart and effective. Don’t be afraid to borrow from what you’ve seen work elsewhere. Try to figure out how other sites are bringing in visitors and try their techniques. Don’t copy directly, just tweak things to suit your own needs and audience.
  2. Your own successes can be borrowed upon as well. Look through your old content and think about your most successful strategies. Reuse what works until it doesn’t work any longer.
  3. Use past behavior to predict future results.

Launching a product also always leads to tons of interview requests, links from other blogs, partnership inquiries, and a different kind of respect from colleagues. Plus, because your new product will generate revenue, this should be top on your list.
  2. Offer an affiliate program and pay commissions to people who refer customers to your product. Reach out to these affiliates before your launch and offer to help them with content, interviews, webinars or anything else that will help them drive sales. How To Create Informative Blog Posts Even If You’re Not Good At Writing

Can you relate to this scenario…

You’re sitting in front of your computer, staring at an empty screen. The deadline given to you to submit the article is fast approaching, and you’re still fighting to start putting words down when you’re supposed to already be at the editing stage.

As you sit there, struggling to get started, a strange feeling of inferiority creeps in – before your own eyes, you see yourself transforming from a confident expert into a self-conscious amateur.

The good thing?

  • You’re not alone.

I used to dislike writing a lot. In fact, the thought of sitting down for hours and writing something that I didn’t even know if anyone would read was so demotivating.

Whenever I needed to write anything, I would procrastinate, thinking that avoiding the task would make it go away. Finally, the procrastination eventually led to lots of rushed writing during the 11th hour to meet my deadlines.

This usually resulted in substandard work.

However, my primary problem wasn’t about writing; it was about fear. I feared to make mistakes, I feared that what I wrote would sound stupid to the reader, and most of all, I feared that I would not be worthy enough to be called a writer.

My Fear Was Causing Me Harm

It sounds preposterous, but my fear of producing mediocre content made writing a depressing experience for me.

I even tried compensating for my fears – I’d use big, irrelevant words trying to “prove” I understood what I was talking about. Unfortunately, all that did was make me sound like a fake jerk.

But then one day, I came across a particular piece of advice that changed everything for me. It was the best writing advice I’ve ever come across, and the best writing advice I can give to you right now:

  • Write the way you speak.

What an emancipating idea!

That sounds so easy, right?

That single piece of advice helped me eliminate my fear of writing. No more using complex, unnecessary words to impress the reader. No more fear of being inauthentic. And most importantly, I didn’t feel the need to procrastinate anymore.

I could just be myself, relax, and write exactly what was on my mind.

Now, let me make something clear: Writing the way you speak does not mean you should write content that sucks.

It’s meant solely to help get rid of the mental barriers of procrastination and fear that prevent you from being a more productive and engaging writer.

Let me show you how to use the “write the way you speak methodology” to crush your insecurities and avoid sounding like a pretentious idiot…

1. Assume You’re Chatting With A Good Friend

Great writing is an interaction between the writer and the reader. So whenever you’re writing anything, imagine yourself explaining the topic to a friend who’s sitting next to you. Think of the easiest way you would explain this topic to them.

During that conversation:

  • How would you introduce that subject?
  • What kinds of words would you use to make the topic clearer?
  • What instances and real-life examples would you give to make them understand your topic?
  • How would you make your story more relatable?
  • What questions might they ask?
  • How would you wrap up that topic so they feel satisfied with the discussion?

Writing this way will enable you to write great copy that better engages your audience, is more interesting, more informative, and exists in a conversational tone.

Simply close your eyes and imagine yourself taking with your friend. As you do this, jot down the interaction. That’s all there is to it.

2. Relax And Be Yourself

By writing the way you speak, you will also naturally inject a little personality into your writing.

After all, you’re writing in your own voice using straightforward and easy to understand English, and in a tone that makes you sound more like a human than a textbook.

Now, mix that with a few well-placed personal and relevant stories, and you have the makings of an irresistible piece of copy.

Just remember to make it natural. Don’t say anything that isn’t true, relevant, or unnecessary to the conversation.

Stick to the topic at hand and let the words come naturally.

3. Use The Same Language You Use In Your Daily Life 

If you write the way you speak, you’ll be more inspired to use regular, everyday words that you would usually use in general discussion.

This prevents you from sounding like a show off using obtuse and generally confusing language that makes your readers roll their eyes in disappointment.

Keep your writing very clear and simple without using artificially magnified language.

A good rule of thumb: If your average reader would reach for a dictionary to understand a word, then you need to change that word.

You should not try to show off because all that will happen is you will embarrass yourself.

4. Throw Away The Rule Book And Just Write

If all the rules about writing styles, passive/active voice, punctuation, and proper grammar are contributing to your insecurities about writing, throw away the “rule book” for a while, and just write.

Some people try to be very meticulous about the whole writing process, and they end up very carefully selecting each word as they craft a piece of content. This results in a very unnatural tone and an overall piece that comes across as too boring and too technical.

Just forget about everything you know about “how to write well”. Focus more on writing down the major points of your idea in your first draft, and don’t worry about any other thing right now.

The editing stage is where you need to focus on the nuts and bolts of the piece. Notice any errors? Is there anything that could be changed to add more clarity? I guarantee there are some things that need editing, and here is where you should do that. Make sure everything is clear, crisp, and free of errors.

Once you’ve made those corrections, abandon the article and look at it again the next day with fresh eyes. You will probably see some things that need to be re-edited. Now is the time to go and do that.

5. Read It Out Aloud

One of the best editing strategies is reading your writing out loud.

When you’re doing this, every awkward sentence and piece of bad grammar will become apparent. When you “write the way you speak”, your words should sound just as natural coming out as they did going in.

As you read your writings out loud, pay close attention to those places that seem to trip you up and leave you a bit confused — some extra attention for those spots is required.

Here’s the rule: If a particular sentence or paragraph doesn’t sound well on your ear, you need to rewrite it until it flows properly.

Write The Way You Speak And Overcome Writing Insecurities

For you to become an excellent and proficient writer, you must first conquer your fear of screwing up or sounding stupid. Just learn to write the way you speak, and you’ll be able to dish out your first draft effortlessly.

Once you get used to that, you’ll find that you’re actually a great writer and you’ll be able to get more writing done quickly without feeling like a fraud.

This same writing process has worked for me for many years, and I’m convinced it’ll equally work for you if you practice it.

Just write the way you speak and the piece becomes a conversation instead of a lecture.

So instead of having a handful of students listening to a professor talk about something boring, you now have a handful of friends who feel like they’re involved in the conversation.

This is how we create rapport and build trust with an audience.

And when those two things come, many more good things come, too!

It’s always better to know what you are getting into, so we want to share some of the reasons why blogging is much better than a traditional job.

Here is a list to keep you working on your blog and make your dreams come true.

1. You Can Work Anywhere you want

I start work when I get up… after a 1-minute commute (from my bedroom)!

I stop when I want.

I take a break and go shopping or head to the gym whenever I feel like it.

You guessed it. I work from home.

As a blogger, you can too.

The great thing about removing your attachment to a job and a location is the freedom it brings. Being able to work at home, or anywhere else you like, is usually the first thing that comes to mind.

I often work when I am visiting any different place, or even when I am on the road traveling. It does not matter. My laptop is my office.

Maybe you have young children or a dog that needs walking every day. Wouldn’t working from home make your life a whole lot easier (and cheaper – less fuel, less dog walker costs, etc.)?

That is just one scenario. I bet you have your own reasons why working from anywhere is pretty awesome.

2. You Can Earn However Much You Want To Earn

One of the things that really used to annoy me when I was “working” for a living was begging for a small pay rise each year. It was always the same, no matter where I worked. Even if I had worked my butt off (and usually I did), I would still rarely get more than a few percent raise. That is just the way it works.

Of course, you can get a new job or shoot for a promotion, but this is harder to do and doesn’t happen that often.

With blogging and the online world in general, the control is all yours. Want to work longer hours, or harder and smarter? You can earn a lot more!

3. There Are So Many Ways To Earn Money

When you think of blogging, you probably imagine writing blog posts. But, if you want to earn serious money with your blog, you will have to diversify your income streams. This means increasing the breadth of what you do.

It also means facing lots of challenges and changes and adapting fast. But the benefits are huge.

You will never get bored with the “same old thing”. And, on top of that, you kind of get to choose what you focus on most.

No one is there to tell you what needs to be done, or what direction “the company” is focusing on right now. That is entirely up to you.

So, if you want to start earning more money from teaching what you know (because you love to teach), go for it! Or maybe you want to sell your knowledge as a service, helping other bloggers or small businesses to work with WordPress, social media, or anything else you are good at.

4. Blogging Never Gets Boring

Yes, you can choose what you want to do. But you will also learn like you have never learned before.

Blogging, and working online in general, requires such a varied skill set that it will blow your mind.

You need to learn so many skills to blog, including (but not limited to):

  • Running a website.
  • Writing blog posts.
  • Working with social media.
  • Using a variety of online software (images, email software, analytics).
  • Working and collaborating with people.
  • Managing, hiring, and outsourcing.

The things I need to learn and focus on seem to never end. In fact, as your blog grows and what you are working on changes, the list of skills you need to have grows and changes.

The next point is additional. You can say it is bonous for you hope you like it.

5. The People You Meet Are Amazing

When you are doing what you love, you tend to attract like-minded people. That is one of the huge benefits of blogging and working independently.

My whole outlook has changed, and with it, so has my circle of friends.

I now look for and hang out with people who understand how I think and what I do. As well as that, I love talking about new ideas, learning new things, and just being surrounded by people with passion.

When I was at my “traditional” job, it was usually the opposite. Sure, some people loved their jobs, but it was the exception, not the rule. And this is not an inspiring way to spend the majority of your life; bored and uninspired.

When you do what you love, your life will never be the same.

Would you agree that knowing the goals, passions, and struggles of your audience would grow your blog quickly? If so, you’d be right. But how do you get in the mind of your audience?

The best way to intimately understand your audience is through surveys. I want to share with you 5 unique ways you can better understand your audience using simple surveys.

5 Unique Ways to Better Connect with Your Audience Through Surveys

1. The Annual Reader Survey

A great strategy to employ in an effort to stay in touch with your audience is the annual reader survey. This is the most lengthy of all the surveys listed here.

The goal is for you to get a thorough understanding of both the demographics and psychographics of your audience.

The demographics help you to understand the average age of your audience, life stage, income level, education level, and so on.

The psychographics assists you in getting into the mind of your audience. What are their goals, passions, and struggles? What fears do they have and what keeps them awake at night?

One of the best examples of a blogger who does the annual reader survey well is Michael Hyatt. I’ve used his template in the past to survey my own audiences with success.

2. The Occasional Deep Dive Survey

Whether you decide to go for the annual reader survey or not, I’d strongly encourage you to at the very least start with a deep dive survey.

The goal of the deep-dive survey is to only ask 3-6 questions that give you the highest participation with the most important information you want.

For example, one of the most important questions you can ask your audience is: “What’s the single biggest challenge you have with [insert topic]?”

The goal then is for you to group all your answers into 3-5 customer segment buckets. Now, you have a strategy for creating products and services driven by direct feedback from your audience and not something you just assumed.

3. The Segment Your Traffic Survey

After the deep-dive survey, He uses a survey strategy he calls the micro-commitment survey. I call it the segment your traffic survey.

What if you were able to engage your website visitors into a quick survey that places them into the topic they are most interested in? Would it be easy to get them to open emails and possibly purchase products and services from you? Of course, it would.

4. The Product Launch Survey

I’ve deployed this survey strategy before every online course I’ve ever created. I usually like to ask 5-7 questions only. I use the feedback to better understand what to include in the course. Also, it makes for great copy for your sales pages.

For example, before launching Kindle Your Passion, I asked my audience: “Have you every thought about publishing a Kindle book?” When 87% of them said “yes” I knew this was a high demand product.

5. The Pivot Survey

Ryan Levesque also uses this survey strategy in his business as well. I love this idea and plan to use it in my business. Essentially, this survey is an email that goes out to non-buyers of your product and simply asks them: “What would you like to learn about next?”

Depending on what they select you can have an autoresponder email sequence triggered to deliver them future content about that topic. While it may take the time to set this up, it’s a great automated strategy to work toward.

Personally, I wouldn’t want to spend all those hours writing and working on my blog unless I knew I was going to do something meaningful with it.

When you sit down to blog (either on your site or a guest spot) you want to make sure at least one thing occurs: you want every article to play a role.

Every blog post should play a role in your blog’s overall, longterm strategy.

It might be a short-term role, or it might be a long-term role that sees you gradually building your mailing list, Google rankings, and eventual sales.

But you never want to spend hours researching and writing an article to just get a quick burst of traffic and nothing else.

It’s wasteful.

Hopefully, at the end of this post, you’ll have a starting point for how you can start to blog in a more cohesive and way – a strategy to take it to the next level.

1. Always start at the end and work backward

The first thing I always like to do is carefully think about what it is that I want my visitors to do at each step along the way. Most importantly, you want to know exactly what the end result of your process will be.

So what kind of goals am I talking about?

  • Financial goals
    Will they be purchasing an eBook, website membership or some other product that you have created or plan to create in the near future?
  • Non-financial goals
    Or maybe you have a non-financial goal like promoting a cause or building your reputation in a certain industry to further offline career options. It might be as simple as growing a mailing list of a particular type of reader that may be useful in the future.

For the purpose of this post, I’m going to use the example of a yoga blog.

Every time you post a new article, make a new collaboration or purchase some advertising space, you want to make sure it’s helping to achieve one of your yoga blog’s end goals.

If you’re just getting traffic for the sake of traffic you will waste a lot of time.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you have to have the whole premium course, eBook or program written and developed before you can start blogging strategically. That would also be a mistake. You just want to have a clear idea about the topic and the target audience because then you know who you are going after and who you’re trying to get on your mailing list.

2. Create a mailing list and landing page to match your target audience

Once you have figured out your end product or goal (remember, it might not be ready for six months) you then want to go about creating a mailing list funnel that matches it very closely.

Here’s how it works.

Let’s say you want to sell a course called How to Build a Successful Yoga School in 12 Months. The first thing to do is set up a mailing list that specifically caters to that one future course and attracts readers to that mailing list with a five-part free email series called something like 5 Secrets from the World’s Top Yoga Schools.

This will be your first product funnel on that mailing list but over the years you can, of course, add new ones.

Make this a useful course that gets sent to email subscribers automatically once they sign up to your new mailing list.

Think of it as a free gift to thank them for subscribing.

You’d then create a landing page that explains your free, five-part course.

This landing page should:

  • Focus on the benefits
    Don’t just explain the features of the email series, tell them what they will get out of it.
  • Explain the procedure
    Make sure you explain how the mailing list thing works. You don’t want anyone to subscribe and then get surprised at all your emails and mark them as spam.
  • Have some social proof
    Go ahead and put some testimonials and endorsements up on your landing page so that potential subscribers know it’s legitimate. If you don’t have any of these, look through your comments or social media pages and ask a regular reader/friend to write an honest one for you.
  • Appear as a feature on your blog
    Make sure you link to this landing page in a relevant and highly visible place on your blog. Consider making a graphic and adding it to your sidebar using a plugin like Scroll Triggered Box which slides out and draws attention.

In the end, you will have created a simple mailing list offering and landing page combo that attracts the exact type of people that might be interested in buying your course when you finally release it.

The next step is to find that traffic.

3. Research to find that super-targeted traffic

So you’ve matched your mailing list offer to your future product.

Now you need to match your traffic sources to your mailing list.

This is the most important step and, in my opinion, the one that most bloggers don’t understand.

All traffic is different. Even people that might be highly interested in yoga (to follow our example) might be completely uninterested in starting a school. So you have to be very careful about the type of visitor that you go after.

It’s not enough to just think about the sources of traffic – organic search rankings, referrals from other blogs, forums, paid to advertise, etc. – you also need to carefully consider the individual people that will be coming through from those places.

How, then, do we find the right people?

  • Analyze and utilize the “close” competition
    The first step I usually take is to look at the competition in that niche. First, you want to see what they’ve done that has been successful. Use services like Majestic SEO, Market Samurai or Ahrefs to check what websites are linking to them. Second, you want to find out if they accept guest posts or hire writers which you can usually discover by reading their About or Contact pages. Make a list of all the closely matched websites in that niche.
  • Analyze and utilize the “far” competition
    Once you’ve looked at the close opportunities you want to start looking for the stuff that no one has thought about. For example, if you want to grow a list around the yoga school example, you might start looking for less obvious places that your target traffic might be hanging out like bodybuilding forums, physiotherapy practices with blogs, news sites, etc. These are the types of places you can often get a guest post on a less direct topic and still drive back links and traffic. More on this later.

When you are first building this strategy there is very little need for things like Twitter and Facebook posts. They simply don’t have the reach unless you have an existing audience or are spending money.

Sure, be on them, but don’t spend hours and hours posting there.

4. Guest post with your landing page strategy in mind

Once you’ve researched your target sites it’s important to start landing some big guest post spots that promote the landing page and mailing list that we built earlier.

But as many bloggers know, it can be really hard to get a guest post unless you’re already well-known in the industry.

So what do you do?

You build strategic connections.

All success comes from other people.

You need people “above” you who give you guest posting opportunities, mentions, and support when you have new ideas or problems. And you need people “below” you who share your posts with their networks, comment on your articles and subscribe to your mailing list.

Now, I don’t mean this to sound degrading (no one is more important than anyone else), it’s just a device to help me remember.

Here’s what I mean:

  • Alliances above you
    This is all the people who are more experienced than you. People with big audiences, popular blogs, or bigger networks that can be useful to you. In my mind, they are “above” me because they’re saved in my bookmarks folder!
  • Alliances below you
    This is all the people that are still up and coming that engage with your blog. Subscribers, readers and other bloggers that are in your niche and still looking to grow and expand.
    It’s extremely important to make connections with both areas.

If I hadn’t made connections with people like Darren Rowse, Glen Allsopp, Brian Clark and Chris Ducker I honestly feel like my career wouldn’t be anywhere near where it is.

But it’s so important that you do it in a genuine way. These guys and girls have been through all the hardships that you’ve been through and it’s really nice to be able to support each other as online friends.

The most effective way I’ve found to get on the radar of these big bloggers is to mention them in your guest posts. Sure, giving them a shout out on your blog is nice but if you take the extra step and mention them on someone else’s big blog you’ll instantly get brownie points.

Once you have built up a relationship with the right bloggers it’s then a good idea to try and land some guest posting spots. Once you do that, make sure you personally talk to every single person who shares, comments or mentions your article.

Build those other connections!

Remember, these guest posts all have specific purposes and form part of our strategy.

Every guest post that you do should achieve the following goals:

  • Provide a long-term source of traffic
    If you get the right spots, it’s likely that their site will have better Google rankings than your own. This is good. Research keywords and write brilliant, long-form articles that rank for years and send you constant streams of traffic.
  • Pre-sell your landing page
    Pre-selling is where you generate interest for something that a reader/client hasn’t even seen yet. For this strategy, you want your guest posts to pre-sell your mailing list by making people super-curious about the specific topic that you’re covering or problem that you’re solving. When they click through to your blog from your guest post they should be instantly attracted to your mailing list offering.
  • Build relationships
    The last thing you want to make sure that you do is consolidate your relationship with the site owner. Find a way to make an impact in a distinctive way that makes you stand out from other guest bloggers. This might mean going a little further than normal and developing graphics, videos, slides, etc. The best outcome here is that your guest post ranks so well on Google that it sends them (and you!) traffic for years.

So how do you come up with something that meets all of these criteria?


Break down your mailing list offering.

Let me explain.

Let’s go back to the yoga school hypothetical mailing list offering of 5 Secrets from the World’s Top Yoga Schools. A tactical guest post in this niche would be on a BuzzFeed-style site called something like 21 Photos Inside the Yoga Schools of the Celebrities. You’ve taken a topic directly related to your mailing list offering and turned it into the brilliant content of its own accord.

Done correctly, this type of guest post gets a lot of shares on Facebook and also attracts your target audience because yoga school teachers will have their students, family, and friends tagging them in the post to show them these fancy school buildings.

A second example of a tactical guest post would be on a popular business website or business section of a news website.

An article like How Maria Built a $1m a Year Yoga School in a Recession would provide an opportunity for a great long-form article and a lot of interest from your target audience as well as other bloggers who might link to interesting case studies.

Just take your mailing list offering or end product and break it down into smaller sub-topics. I’ve found this to be an extremely useful way to ensure your guest posts continue to work for you over a long period of time while making them highly relevant to all the stuff that you are going to be doing in the future.

In the end, this strategy will turn your blog into a hyper-optimised conversion machine. Your posts and traffic will all be deliberately targeted towards that mailing list offering, which is the perfect introduction to your future product.

Remember, you can always tweak and change your product or promotions as this strategy goes along. But the idea is to make it all as targeted and automated as possible.
