As I didn’t have a lot of traffic, I started looking for other monetizing methods. Then I came to know about Affiliate Marketing.

At that time, I didn’t find any step by step guide about monetizing blog through affiliate marketing. However, I was able to learn some basic affiliate marketing tips from different blogs (for example, for Amazon affiliate marketing, I’m following Market ever).

After having some ideas about affiliate marketing, I started trying it on my blog. It took almost six months to get my first affiliate sale. It seemed a slow process to me.

Recently I’ve bought a new blog and monetized it through affiliate marketing. I followed some steps that I’ve learned from my four years of blogging journey.

If you want to monetize your blog with affiliate marketing but don’t know where to start, this post is for you.

In this post, I am going to share those 7 steps that I followed to monetize my new blog through affiliate marketing.

Step #1 – Check If You are Already Promoting Products/Services That Offer Affiliate Programs

If you’ve been blogging for few months, chances that you’ve already linked to a number of recommended products/services on your blog posts that have affiliate programs.

The easiest way to get started with affiliate marketing is to find those products/services and join their affiliate programs. As you are already sending traffic to those products/services, it will be easier for you to earn affiliate commission from them.

Now let’s see how to find those affiliate programs. Follow these simple steps…

At first, you need to find where you are sending traffic from your blog. You can use Jetpack stats to see which links users clicked to leave your blog. Just install Jetpack plugin and connect it with your WordPress.com account. Most of the features of Jetpack including ‘Site Stats’ will be activated automatically. You need to give it few days to collect data for you. However, sometimes one-day data is good enough to get started.

If you are already using Jetpack plugin, that’s awesome. Just go to your WordPress dashboard and click on “Site Stats” from Jetpack.

You will find a “Clicks” section there showing external links that users clicked.

Then click on “Summaries” to see the overall clicks.

Now you have the list of sites where you are sending traffic. Make a list of those sites that offer products/services. Then go to those sites one by one and look for a link (mostly on the footer) that says “Affiliates”, “Affiliate Program”, “Become An Affiliate” or “Referral Program”. Follow the link and sign up for their affiliate programs.

You can also search on Google to check if there is any affiliate program for a particular product/service. Just search for terms like “[Product/Service] Affiliate Program” or “[Product/Service] Referral Program”

If there is an affiliate program for searched term, just join the affiliate program. If you haven’t found any affiliate program for the product/service, just set up a Google Alerts for the terms “[Product/Service] Affiliate Program”. You will get notifications about the affiliate programs.

I hope you’ve found some affiliate programs. But remember, just because it has affiliate program doesn’t mean you should promote it. You have to make sure that you are promoting the right products. If you end up promoting a bad product, you will loose TRUST of your audience which is very important for affiliate marketing. So choose wisely.

Now join the available affiliate programs that seem right to you. It might take some times to get approved by Affiliate Program.

Step #2 – Find Relevant Affiliate Programs

If you haven’t found any affiliate programs (or just found a few programs) by following step #1, don’t worry.

In this step, I will show you how to find relevant affiliate programs for your blog.

Finding relevant affiliate programs is very important to get success in affiliate marketing. Just because someone makes huge money from Web hosting affiliate programs doesn’t mean this will work for you too. You have to find products/services that are relevant to your blog.

Here are some ways to find out the right affiliate programs for your blog.

  1. Think of some relevant products/services you like and check if there are any affiliate programs for those products/services.
  2. Do some research on successful blogs on your niche. Discover what products/services they are promoting on their blogs. Take a look at their sidebar banners and resource/tools page. Check if there are any product review posts on their blogs.
  3. Search on Google. If you are running a health blog, search for the term “Health-related affiliate programs”
  4. Use an Affiliate Network. It acts as a mediator between publishers (you) and merchant affiliate programs. It’s a marketplace of affiliate programs. You will get thousands of affiliate programs on a single affiliate network. There are a lot of affiliate networks and here are some best affiliate networks.
  • Shareasale is one of the most popular affiliate marketing networks that has over 3900 affiliate programs. It has affiliate programs for almost every niche.
  • ClickBank is the best marketplace for digital products. It has digital products for every niche.
  • CJ Affiliate by Conversant (formerly Commission Junction) is one of the oldest networks.
  • Impact Radius is very popular for tracking, reporting, and payment.
  • Amazon Associates is the biggest affiliate program offered by Amazon. If you are planning to promote physical products, join Amazon associates.

ShareASale is an Affiliate Network that is used by thousands of bloggers.

Make a list of relevant affiliate programs for your blog. And start joining them one by one.

Step #3 – Cloak Your Affiliate Links & Add Those Links Automatically into Your Posts

I hope you already got approved by some of the affiliate programs you’ve joined.  If you haven’t got approved by all programs immediately, don’t worry. While some affiliate programs approve immediately, others might take some times.

Every affiliate program provides you a unique affiliate link to track your sales. This link may look something like this:

http://partners.xyz.com/c/214426/177309/3094

This is pretty ugly and scary. You’d not love to add this link to your blog posts.

What you can do is cloaking the affiliate link. It means masking the affiliate link. Your cloaked affiliate link will be something like this:

https://earnwebtech.com/go/xyz/

It looks good and it’s easy to remember.

Like everything, you can do it by using a WordPress plugin. There are a lot of affiliate link manager plugins out there.

I am using ThirstyAffiliate to manage my affiliate links. It’s very easy to use. Just Install the plugin and go to WordPress Dashboard > Affiliate Links > Add New.

Yes, it’s that much easy.

I’ve seen a lot of bloggers not to cloak affiliate links. It’s a huge mistake!

If you don’t cloak your affiliate links, you’ll be in trouble when one of your affiliates decides to change its affiliate link. Recently HostGator has moved its Affiliate Program to Impact Radius from in-house. As an HostGator affiliate, I have to update all HostGator links with the new affiliate link. It’d be tough for me if I wasn’t using an affiliate link manager plugin.

So cloak your affiliate links right away.

Now let’s see how to add affiliate links automatically to your blog posts.

As you weren’t in affiliate marketing from day 1 of your blogging journey, chances that you’ve linked to recommend products/services several times. But those were just plain links, not affiliate links. Those won’t generate commission for you.

It’d be tough for you to find those links and replace those links with affiliate links one by one.

Here’s an easy way. Thirsty Affiliate has an add-on named Autolinker that will do it for you.

ThirstyAffiliate Autolinker scans your all blog posts and replaces all specified keywords into affiliate links. Just setup your affiliate links with a list of Keywords and it takes care of the rest.

However, it’s a premium addon-on which costs $49 AUD (about $35 USD). But it worths your money.

Once you’ve installed the add-on, you will notice “Autolinks Keywords” section when you’re about to add a new affiliate link. Just specify the keywords that you want to replace with affiliate links.

You can also add Keywords to your old affiliate links. Just edit those links.

You can select the number of times you want Autolinker to add affiliate links.

Automatic affiliate linking will surely increase your revenue.

Step #4 – Use An Affiliate Aggregator Service

If you write about many topics on a single blog, then you will have to join a lot of affiliate programs to monetize your blog properly.

It will be time-consuming. On that case, you might consider using an affiliate aggregator service like VigLink which will automate access to thousands of affiliate programs.

VigLink is connected with more than 30,000 affiliate programs. It converts your website’s outbound links into affiliate links. It also adds links to products or brands within your content.

For example, if you mention the word “iPad” on your blog post, VigLink will automatically add an affiliate link to this word. You don’t have to join any specific affiliate program for that. VigLink will take care of that.

If you mention lots of products name on your blog posts, I’d suggest you to start using VigLink on your blog.

Step #5 – Update Your “Most Popular Posts” With Affiliate Links

No matter how you have been blogging, some of your posts will be generating more traffic than others. Those are the most popular posts of your blog.

These posts can help you to generate affiliate sales. All you have to do is adding affiliate links properly to your most visited posts.

Here’s how to do it.

  1. At first, login to Google Analytics/Jetpack/Clicky or whatever you are using to track your visitors.
  2. Find the most visited posts of your blog. If you are using Jetpack, just go to WordPress Dashboard > Jetpack > Site Stats and click on “Summaries” from “Top Posts & Pages”.

3. Make a list of top 10 posts and start with the first one.

4. Review the post and look for affiliate opportunities. But don’t be aggressive.

5. Check how other bloggers are monetizing the same topic post.

6. If you haven’t found any relevant affiliate links for the post, at least, try to link a post which you’ve monetized with affiliate links.

7. Do the same for other posts.

I’d suggest you not to be aggressive while adding affiliate links to your most popular posts. If there is no relevant affiliate link for the post, just keep as it is. But you can optimize the post for subscribers, social exposure etc.

Step #6 – Write Blog Posts That Generate Sales

By now you should have a good idea of what products/services to promote on your blog. But if you don’t know how to promote it properly, you won’t be able to increase your sales.

Now I’ll be sharing few blog post types that generate sales.

Review Posts – Though product reviews shouldn’t be written just for the sake of affiliate sales, but you can expect some sales from your reviews. Just make sure that you are honest with your reviews. No product is perfect. So don’t hesitate to write the cons of the products.

Here are some essential tips for writing product reviews.

  • Write pros and cons of the product/service.
  • Share your personal experience how you use the product.
  • Use keywords like price, problem, and review to generate traffic from Search Engines.
  • Give rating to the product. I use WP Rich Snippets Plugin to do that. It will increase your CTR.
  • Add a clear recommendation.
  • Share special discounts or free trial if there is any.

Comparison Posts – These posts are very effective for affiliate marketing. People often search for comparison between products. You can take this advantage.

Just pick two products that are very similar and people get confused about which one to choose.

For example, HostGator and Bluehost are two best web hosting companies. People often search for the term “HostGator Vs Bluehost”. You can help people to choose one and expect some sales.

‘How to’ Posts – These are the most popular posts on the internet. You can use these posts to generate affiliate sales from your blog. For this, you have to find out how your affiliate products/services can solve others’ problems. And write ‘How to’ posts based on affiliate products.

You can also write List Posts, Alternative List Posts etc to generate sales. Just be creative.

  • There is virtually no support available and even something as simple as a design change warrants a cost (thus becoming not free)
  • You will have an ugly URL, such as www.yourblog.blogspot.com
  • Most importantly, you don’t own your blog when it’s on a free platform – it’s literally like building your house on land that you don’t own

Let me address that last point again. If your blog is a free platform, you do not own the blog or the URL. This means (and it has happened before) that your blog could be shut down at the drop of a hat, for any reason they see fit. Some blogs have been shut down because the blogger was working with a company that the platform owners don’t like. You don’t want to put your blog in someone else’s hands just to save five bucks a month.

STEP 3: PICK A NAME

The first thing you need to do is pick a domain name (i.e your website name). When picking your domain name, there are no hard and fast rules on what to pick. There’s no such thing as a “wrong domain” but there are a couple of things you should know to help you pick the best domain:

Make a name that can last. If you pick “JohnsAsiaAdeventure.com” and then you leave Asia, the domain won’t make sense anymore. Make sure you pick a name that isn’t so focused that if you decide to shift gears or change your focus, you can keep the same domain name.

Try to avoid words like “nomad,” “vagabond,” “wanderlust,” and “adventure.” They have been done to death.

Pick a name that describes what you do as much as possible. I was a nomad so “Nomadic Matt” was the best pick for me. If you’re into luxury, put words in your domain that convey that. You want people to see the name and go “I get what that website is about.”

Keep it short. Use 3-4 words maximum. You want the name that rolls off the tongue. Even Ramit Sethi from “I Will Teach You to Be Rich” often abbreviates his site to “I Will Teach” or “IWT”. The shorter the better.

Keep it simple. I’m not a fan of using jargon or slang in your domain name as I think that makes things confusing for people who don’t know it. The last thing you want is something going “What does that mean?” or being confused. If someone has to think of the meaning, then you’ve already lost them. So don’t try to be clever either!

STEP 4: SIGN UP FOR HOSTGATOR

To get started, go to HostGator’s home page.

After you’ve picked out your domain name, you’ll need to register it and buy hosting (the little computer that’s going to power your website). There are a lot of basic hosting companies out there – Hostgator and Bluehost being to two biggest.

Though owned by the same parent company, I lean towards Hostgator as I find their call center customer service quicker and friendlier and they are prone to fewer outages (no one wants their website to go down). I’ve been using them for years and still have a few domains and email through them.

Here’s a walk-through of how to register your name with Hostgator:

First, choose the hatchling plan. This is the most basic plan but it’s perfect for new blogs and I wouldn’t recommend spending more money until you get a lot of traffic and decide you’re going to do this long term!

After you pick that plan, you’ll be sent to the order form. Enter your domain name and select the hosting package you want. Be sure to add “domain privacy protection” as this keeps your registration information from being public record. After this, it will have you include your billing address and payment information. It will also ask you if you want to by additional add-on services. DO NOT PICK ANY. You won’t need them. From there, it will run your credit card and presto! You have a domain name!

Then you will see your order is in process wait few seconds

After you’ve paid, you’ll get to this screen where you can see your domain name and account information:

After this process you can see your Cpanel login details in your Email:-

Now you can log in to your Cpanel account

STEP 5: INSTALL WORDPRESS

After you’ve registered your domain name and got your hosting package, the next thing you want to do is install WordPress. WordPress is what will actually run the website.  The host is simply the computer your site sits on. To set WordPress up:

In the same screen as above, click “hosting” and, in the next screen, “Get Started with WordPress Today”:

You’ll be taken to this screen. Click WordPress:

In the drop-down menu, select your domain name and hit next. Enter your user information. Under blog title, enter the name of your blog. Create a strong username and then hit install.

The Base Domain for your installation.

The subdirectory you would like the site to load from if desired. You can leave this blank. Example: Should you wish your WordPress URL to be mydomain.com/site instead of just mydomain.com. Your site will always display this extension if you enter one.

For Admin Email, enter an email address where you want the admin password emailed to. Make sure this is a working email address.

For Blog Title, enter the name of the website. This is what will appear in the header as the name of your site.

For Admin Username, enter your preferred username.

Your first name.

Your last name.

Click Install WordPress when you’re ready to proceed.

After clicking on Install WordPress button you will see WordPress installation in the process:- 

And after few minutes you will see WordPress installation complete.

 

After you’ve installed WordPress onto Hostgator, go to domainname.com/wp-admin and use the username and password you created to login.

You’ll see a screen like this after you login:

If you’d like to create a different password (something stronger or more memorable), then go to your wp-login screen at domainname.com/wp-admin, click on “reset the password,” and you’ll be sent instructions on how to reset it.

That’s it! Now your website is up and running and you’re ready to start blogging!

STEP 6: INSTALL YOUR THEME

Next, you need to make your website look pretty. One of the most important things a blog needs besides good content is a good design. People decide in seconds whether or not they trust your website and choose to stay. A visually unappealing website will turn off readers and reduce the number of return visits you get. So to accomplish a good design, you will need an amazing WordPress theme (i.e., design templates and files). You have 3 options:

Free Themes – Free themes are plentiful and for budding new bloggers looking to make their mark online, they seem like a great option as it allows you to keep costs low. There are many great free themes available online but most of them are not amazing.

If you plan on blogging for a long time, this might become a problem as your website grows. However, if you just need a simple design to blog for your friends and family, then go the free route. You can find some good free themes at wordpress.org.

Premium Themes – The next step up from a free theme is a premium theme. Premium themes are paid themes that offer a bit more uniqueness, flexibility, and functionality. These cost from $25 USD and up, depending on the developer and features.

With a premium theme, you almost always have a support forum that can help you begin to learn how to customize your site yourself. This can be a great way to introduce yourself to PHP and HTML code (which is what your theme and WordPress is created with) without having to worry about breaking your site and not having anybody to help you fix it.

The two best companies to buy premium themes from are WooThemes and StudioPress. My personal favorite is StudioPress as it is more SEO-friendly, a bit sleeker, and cooler. WooThemes are great for photographers and more “fun” personal blogs.

Custom Themes – If you have the money and want a completely unique website, a custom theme is the only way to go. Hiring a website designer/developer will allow you to build the site you dream of and get everything you want. A good WordPress theme from a good designer and developer starts at about $1,500 USD, though the typical average is $3,000-5,000 USD. In my experience, you get the coding you pay for, and cheap can lead to many problems later, so you’ll want a reputable and experienced person.

The best thing to do is ask around for someone, but if you don’t know anyone, two sites you can use to find freelancers are UpWork and 99 Designs.

As a new blogger, I would go with option #1 or 2 as it will be the easiest. To install your theme, simply go to the left-hand column, click Appearance –> Themes –> upload. Whatever theme you picked will come as a .ZIP file for you to easily upload. From, there you just activate it and it’s turned on. All themes come with a manual and help file so you can customize your design to your specific needs.

STEP 7: INSTALL YOUR PLUGINS

From there, the second thing you want to do is install plugins. Plugins are a great way to add additional functionality to a WordPress-powered site. And with over 41,000 (at last check) listed in the WordPress Repository and many more premium options available from developers, there are endless possibilities as to what you can do with your site. From the main screen, click Plugins –> Add New on the left-hand column:

If you can think of a feature you’d like to have on your site, I can almost guarantee there is a plugin for it but here are my favorites:

Akismet – Just like getting junk mail in your mailbox, your website will get spammers looking to leave junk comments on your site. Akismet seeks to reduce the amount of this by automatically filtering it for you. This plugin comes installed with WordPress, and all you need do is activate it and sign up for an account at akismet.com.

Yoast SEO – The best SEO plugin out there. This combines the ability to create meta tags and descriptions for your posts, optimize your titles, create a sitemap for search engines to read, customize how your posts appear across social media and do a whole lot more. It’s simple, easy to use, and comes with foolproof instructions.

Relevanssi – While WordPress does a lot of things well, what it fails at is adding search functionality to your site. Relevanssi seeks to fix this and give your readers the most accurate results when searching on your site.

BackWPup – You can never backup your site too much. The WordPress database holds every word you’ve ever written, and if your blog has started to make you a few dollars, you would be nuts not to keep regular backups. BackWPup does it perfectly. With the ability to schedule backups, you needn’t worry about doing it manually (especially useful to the more forgetful among us). There’s also the option to upload backups to Dropbox, Google Drive, and other cloud storage services, ensuring that if the worst does happen, your data will be safe.

Google Analytics For WordPress – Adding analytic tracking to your website is an important move in finding out who your readers are, where they are coming from, and what your most popular content is. When you sign up for Google Analytics, the site asks you to place a snippet of code into your website. For most people, that can be difficult, which is why there’s Google Analytics for WordPress. This adds a lovely graphical interface to your site where you can click a couple of buttons and set up your tracking without any hassle.

SumoMe – This is the best social sharing plugin on the web. Use this. It comes with great analytics and testing features.

Jetpack – Jetpack is aimed at supercharging your website with a host of features from WordPress’s free hosting platform, giving you the best of both worlds. With this plugin, you can add a spell-checker, contact forms, extra widgets, and a whole slew of more features, all with just one plugin.

W3 Total Cache – This plugin works by creating saved copies of your site, saving WordPress from having to generate them for every new visitor. This, in turn, cuts down on the amount of work your hosting server has to do and makes loading your web pages much much faster.

STEP 8: CREATE YOUR MAIN PAGES

After you’ve uploaded your theme, you’re going to want to make a few basic pages on your website in addition to the blog posts. To create these pages (or posts), go again to your left sidebar and click Pages —> Add New. (Or, for blog posts, Posts –> Add New.) The difference between a page and a post is that a page is a static piece of content that lives separate from the blog. A post is a blog post that gets “buried” as you write more and more. For example, this post is a blog. When I update again, another post will get put on top of it and it will be pushed down in the archives, making it harder to find. But a page like my about page lives on the top of the website, right off the main URL, and does NOT get buried. It’s a lot easier to find.

I recommend creating 4 basic pages to start:

About Page – This where you tell people about yourself, your history, what your blog is about, and why it will help them. This is one of the most important pages on your website so make it personable!

Contact Page – People need a way to reach you! Be sure to be very clear on what emails you will and won’t respond to so people don’t send you spam.

Privacy Page – This is a standard user agreement page letting people know what the applicable laws on your site are, that you use cookies, etc etc. You can find out of the box examples throughout the Internet.

Copyright Page – This is a standard page letting people know you own this work and not to steal it. You can find out of the box examples throughout the Internet.

That’s it! You’ve set up your basic website. Sure, there’s social media buttons to add, blogs to write, and images to upload but these 8 steps will create the basic framework of your blog! The hard comes after when you decide you want to turn it into a profession and start thinking about marketing, product creation, and everything in between but that stuff comes later. By following these steps, you’ll get your blog up and be running so you can start sharing your stories and tips!

Take in A Proven Blogging Strategy that Works in Any Niche

Today I need to give you a couple of thoughts on the best way to build up a blogging procedure that will develop your blog paying little respect to the specialty you’re in.

I wager you have a couple of supporters on your blog. You may even have a quite not too bad stream of activity rolling in from Google.

Those things are marvelous. Be that as it may, why wouldn’t you be able to split through to the following level? Why wouldn’t you be able to make those several guests into many thousands?

It’s simple: very few people have a deliberate strategy for their blog.

Most people post, tweet and promote blindly – throwing a bunch of things at the wall to see what sticks. But, by making a few targeted changes you can grow your blog in big ways, much quicker than you thought.

NOTE: This strategy assumes that you are on a self-hosted blogging setup with control to the backend, mailing list, etc.

Do you have the four foundations of a successful blog?

Something I have noticed over the years is that there is a gap between the blog that people would like to run and the things that they actually do to make that happen.

The blogs that succeed almost always:

  • Have short and long term goals
    There is a very deliberate idea of what they want to achieve after a defined period of time.
  • Have a specific strategy in mind
    They don’t just post and hope. The best blogs know what is going to happen at every stage of the process.
  • Spend money
    Can you imagine starting a shop and not spending money on advertising, fit out and stock? The best blogs know that a lot of the time, you need to spend some money to make it work (or at least speed things up).
  • Have well thought out brands
    Ever noticed that the best blogs just “seem” different? That’s deliberate branding. They’ve thought about their point of difference and how to stand out from the crowd.

Now, I know that not every blogger wants to make money from their blog.

But that doesn’t mean you don’t want it to be successful.

Running a successful blog means potentially helping a lot more people, opening new doors to exciting opportunities and reaching new readers who might impact your career and life in big ways.

Personally, I wouldn’t want to spend all those hours writing and working on my blog unless I knew I was going to do something meaningful with it.

The proven blog strategy that works in any niche

When you sit down to blog (either on your site or a guest spot) you want to make sure at least one thing occurs: you want every article to play a role.

Every blog post should play a role in your blog’s overall, longterm strategy.

It might be a short-term role, or it might be a long-term role that sees you gradually building your mailing list, Google rankings, and eventual sales.

But you never want to spend hours researching and writing an article to just get a quick burst of traffic and nothing else.

It’s wasteful.

Hopefully, at the end of this post, you’ll have a starting point for how you can start to blog in a more cohesive and way – a strategy to take it to the next level.

1. Always start at the end and work backward

The first thing I always like to do is carefully think about what it is that I want my visitors to do at each step along the way. Most importantly, you want to know exactly what the end result of your process will be.

So what kind of goals am I talking about?

  • Financial goals
    Will they be purchasing an eBook, website membership or some other product that you have created or plan to create in the near future?
  • Non-financial goals
    Or maybe you have a non-financial goal like promoting a cause or building your reputation in a certain industry to further offline career options. It might be as simple as growing a mailing list of a particular type of reader that may be useful in the future.

For the purpose of this post, I’m going to use the example of a yoga blog.

Every time you post a new article, make a new collaboration or purchase some advertising space, you want to make sure it’s helping to achieve one of your yoga blog’s end goals.

If you’re just getting traffic for the sake of traffic you will waste a lot of time.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you have to have the whole premium course, eBook or program written and developed before you can start blogging strategically. That would also be a mistake. You just want to have a clear idea about the topic and the target audience because then you know who you are going after and who you’re trying to get on your mailing list.

2. Create a mailing list and landing page to match your target audience

Once you have figured out your end product or goal (remember, it might not be ready for six months) you then want to go about creating a mailing list funnel that matches it very closely.

Here’s how it works.

Let’s say you want to sell a course called How to Build a Successful Yoga School in 12 Months. The first thing to do is set up a mailing list that specifically caters to that one future course and attracts readers to that mailing list with a five-part free email series called something like 5 Secrets from the World’s Top Yoga Schools.

This will be your first product funnel on that mailing list but over the years you can, of course, add new ones.

Make this a useful course that gets sent to email subscribers automatically once they sign up to your new mailing list.

Think of it as a free gift to thank them for subscribing.

You’d then create a landing page that explains your free, five-part course.

This landing page should:

  • Focus on the benefits
    Don’t just explain the features of the email series, tell them what they will get out of it.
  • Explain the procedure
    Make sure you explain how the mailing list thing works. You don’t want anyone to subscribe and then get surprised at all your emails and mark them as spam.
  • Have some social proof
    Go ahead and put some testimonials and endorsements up on your landing page so that potential subscribers know it’s legitimate. If you don’t have any of these, look through your comments or social media pages and ask a regular reader/friend to write an honest one for you.
  • Appear as a feature on your blog
    Make sure you link to this landing page in a relevant and highly visible place on your blog. Consider making a graphic and adding it to your sidebar using a plugin like Scroll Triggered Box which slides out and draws attention.

In the end, you will have created a simple mailing list offering and landing page combo that attracts the exact type of people that might be interested in buying your course when you finally release it.

The next step is to find that traffic.

3. Research to find that super-targeted traffic

So you’ve matched your mailing list offer to your future product.

Now you need to match your traffic sources to your mailing list.

This is the most important step and, in my opinion, the one that most bloggers don’t understand.

All traffic is different. Even people that might be highly interested in yoga (to follow our example) might be completely uninterested in starting a school. So you have to be very careful about the type of visitor that you go after.

It’s not enough to just think about the sources of traffic – organic search rankings, referrals from other blogs, forums, paid to advertise, etc. – you also need to carefully consider the individual people that will be coming through from those places.

How, then, do we find the right people?

  • Analyze and utilize the “close” competition
    The first step I usually take is to look at the competition in that niche. First, you want to see what they’ve done that has been successful. Use services like Majestic SEO, Market Samurai or Ahrefs to check what websites are linking to them. Second, you want to find out if they accept guest posts or hire writers which you can usually discover by reading their About or Contact pages. Make a list of all the closely matched websites in that niche.
  • Analyze and utilize the “far” competition
    Once you’ve looked at the close opportunities you want to start looking for the stuff that no one has thought about. For example, if you want to grow a list around the yoga school example, you might start looking for less obvious places that your target traffic might be hanging out like bodybuilding forums, physiotherapy practices with blogs, news sites, etc. These are the types of places you can often get a guest post on a less direct topic and still drive back links and traffic. More on this later.

When you are first building this strategy there is very little need for things like Twitter and Facebook posts. They simply don’t have the reach unless you have an existing audience or are spending money.

Sure, be on them, but don’t spend hours and hours posting there.

4. Guest post with your landing page strategy in mind

Once you’ve researched your target sites it’s important to start landing some big guest post spots that promote the landing page and mailing list that we built earlier.

But as many bloggers know, it can be really hard to get a guest post unless you’re already well-known in the industry.

So what do you do?

You build strategic connections.

All success comes from other people.

You need people “above” you who give you guest posting opportunities, mentions, and support when you have new ideas or problems. And you need people “below” you who share your posts with their networks, comment on your articles and subscribe to your mailing list.

Now, I don’t mean this to sound degrading (no one is more important than anyone else), it’s just a device to help me remember.

Here’s what I mean:

  • Alliances above you
    This is all the people who are more experienced than you. People with big audiences, popular blogs, or bigger networks that can be useful to you. In my mind, they are “above” me because they’re saved in my bookmarks folder!
  • Alliances below you
    This is all the people that are still up and coming that engage with your blog. Subscribers, readers and other bloggers that are in your niche and still looking to grow and expand.
    It’s extremely important to make connections with both areas.

If I hadn’t made connections with people like Darren Rowse, Glen Allsopp, Brian Clark and Chris Ducker I honestly feel like my career wouldn’t be anywhere near where it is.

But it’s so important that you do it in a genuine way. These guys and girls have been through all the hardships that you’ve been through and it’s really nice to be able to support each other as online friends.

The most effective way I’ve found to get on the radar of these big bloggers is to mention them in your guest posts. Sure, giving them a shout out on your blog is nice but if you take the extra step and mention them on someone else’s big blog you’ll instantly get brownie points.

Once you have built up a relationship with the right bloggers it’s then a good idea to try and land some guest posting spots. Once you do that, make sure you personally talk to every single person who shares, comments or mentions your article.

Build those other connections!

Remember, these guest posts all have specific purposes and form part of our strategy.

Every guest post that you do should achieve the following goals:

  • Provide a long-term source of traffic
    If you get the right spots, it’s likely that their site will have better Google rankings than your own. This is good. Research keywords and write brilliant, long-form articles that rank for years and send you constant streams of traffic.
  • Pre-sell your landing page
    Pre-selling is where you generate interest for something that a reader/client hasn’t even seen yet. For this strategy, you want your guest posts to pre-sell your mailing list by making people super-curious about the specific topic that you’re covering or problem that you’re solving. When they click through to your blog from your guest post they should be instantly attracted to your mailing list offering.
  • Build relationships
    The last thing you want to make sure that you do is consolidate your relationship with the site owner. Find a way to make an impact in a distinctive way that makes you stand out from other guest bloggers. This might mean going a little further than normal and developing graphics, videos, slides, etc. The best outcome here is that your guest post ranks so well on Google that it sends them (and you!) traffic for years.

So how do you come up with something that meets all of these criteria?

Simple.

Break down your mailing list offering.

Let me explain.
